Our Yarn Bases

Ever found yarn bases confusing? Have you been a little confused deciding which base would suit your project? I certainly have and with so much choice on offer it can be frustrating.

I am going to tell you a little bit about the bases we offer in our shop and try to give you a little more information and some suggestions about which projects certain bases might be suitable for. The information will help to enable you to decide which yarn base would be the best choice for your projects.

When you are planning a project your pattern should ideally tell you the weight of yarn used and roughly how many yards or meters are required. To help you work out how many skeins you would need for a project I will also give you information on the meterage of each skein so for example a 100g skein of yarn may be roughly 400 meters depending on the thickness of the yarn.

4 Ply Yarns (also referred to as fingering weight or sock weight)

This weight of yarn is the most popular weight for projects and comes in several blends. This weight of yarn is commonly used for making socks, shawls, baby garments and lightweight sweaters. We have a variety of blends available in 4ply.

We offer a selection of merino blends and some Bluefaced Leicester (BFL) blends. Some are more durable for making socks and accessories and garments that get washed a lot and others are softer more luxurious blends. To help guide you I have made some recommendations against each blend as to what projects I would use each blend for. Hopefully this will help you to choose a blend that is perfect for your project. Titanium Sock

The most popular blend and is a mix of:
75% Superwash Merino
25% Nylon
This yarn has a high twist which makes it durable for socks although it also gives a really nice drape for shawls and lightweight sweaters. If you are unsure about which blend to use, this one would be a good choice. Personally I have made socks, accessories and garments with this blend its a great all rounder.
Each 100g skein is approximately 425 meters

Deluxe Sock

Super soft with a beautiful soft drape made of
85% Superwash Extra Fine Merino
15% Nylon
This base is super soft and has a glorious drape which makes a fantastic fabric for wearing next to the skin and is great for scarves, shawls and jumpers but it is also durable and perfect for super squishy socks. I really like the feel of this blend next to the skin and would use this for shawls and sweaters.
Each 100g skein is approximately 400 meters.

Everyday Sock

Durable blend designed specifically for making hard wearing garments
75% Superwash Merino
25% Nylon blend.
This blend is really durable and perfect for socks and garments that will be washed a lot. This base is a favourite for sock knitters. My personal preference for this base is socks, the merino is not as fine as other blends and makes a great durable fabric perfect for your feet.
Each 100g skein is approximately 400 meters

Sparkle Sock

Gorgeous and hardwearing sparkly sock yarn with either gold or silver sparkles.
75% Superwash Merino
20% Nylon
5% Stellina
This blend is perfect for socks, shawls and garments. It is durable enough for socks and soft enough to wear next to the skin. This base is one of my personal favourites because I just love a bit of sparkle, I would use this yarn as a good all rounder strong enough for socks but soft enough to wear next to the skin.
Each 100g skein is approximately 400 meters

Stardust Sparkle Sock

Now with extra sparkle this blend is super soft and great next to the skin.
75% Extra Fine Superwash Merino
15% Nylon
10% Silver Stellina
This blend is super soft and yet is durable enough to make super squishy sparkly socks. I added this slightly higher sparkle yarn to the shop because of its super softness and of course added sparkle! Due to the softness of this yarn I would personally use it for garments and accessories worn next to the skin.
Each 100g skein is approximately 400 meters

BFL Platinum

Hard wearing Bluefaced Leicester and Nylon blend perfect for socks.
75% Superwash BFL
25% Nylon
This blend is a favourite for sock knitters. The longer staple of the BLF fiber makes a really durable and hardwearing blend. It is however soft enough to wear next to the skin. My personal choice for this yarn blend would be socks, however it does have a nice drape and will make a great fabric for garments. While soft, I find BFL isn't quite as soft as merino blends.
Each 100g skein is approximately 425 meters.

BFL Boo

Super soft and squishy this blend is purely natural fibers
80% Superwash BFL
20% Bamboo
This blend is purely natural fibers and is strong and durable whilst also being squishy and soft. This yarn is plump and has a gorgeous drape perfect for socks, shawls and garments. A great choice if you are looking at reducing plastics and fully biodegradable yarns. The bamboo makes this yarn soft and bouncy and I would use this for garments. It would also make great socks if you are looking for an alternative to nylon.
Each 100g skein is approximately 400 meters

Silky Sock

A luxury blend of soft merino wool and silk creates a gorgeous glossy yarn
50% Merino Wool
50% Silk
This gorgeous luxury blend is super soft whilst hardwearing. The silk gives strength to the yarn making it perfect for luxury socks, however I would use this blend for shawls and lightweight garments worn next to the skin because of the natural fiber content and luxurious drape. The silk also gives the yarn a gorgeous sheen. Although with 50% silk these would make great socks my personal preference for this yarn would be a garment.
Each 100g skein is approximately 400 meters.

MCS (Merino Cashmere Silk)

Super soft this luxurious blend makes fantastic garments with a gorgeous drape.
70% Superwash Merino
10% Cashmere
20% Silk
This yarn has a soft yarn with a lot of drape that makes gorgeous garments. It can be used for socks as the silk will give the yarn durability, but I would recommend this blend is best used for garments and items worn next to the skin. Personally I would use this base for garments and accessories worn next to the skin as it is super soft.
Each 100g skein is approximately 400 meters

DK Yarns (also referred to as double knit)

This yarn is commonly used in making accessories and garments and is widely used in knitting and crochet projects. Not as commonly used in sock making, however it can be used to make a thicker warm sock ideal for wearing in winter.

We offer a couple of merino blends and to help guide you I have made some recommendations against each blend as to what projects I would use each blend for. Hopefully this will help you to choose a blend that is perfect for your project. Ultra DK

Super squishy this yarn is perfect for most knitting or crochet projects
100% Superwash Merino
This yarn is supersoft and bouncy and is perfect for accessories and garments. Personally I would use this yarn to make hats, shawls, cowls and garments.
Each 100g skein is approximately 225 meters

Titanium DK

Squishy with a fantastic drape this yarn is a great all rounder
75% superwash merino
25% nylon
This yarn is soft with a lovely drape and is perfect for accessories and garments which is what I would personally use this base for. Because of the nylon content this base will make great DK weight socks.
Each 100g skein is approximately 225 meters.

Lace Weight Yarns

This weight of yarn is super lightweight and great for lightweight lacy shawls or garments or simply for holding double with other yarns to add texture.

We offer a selection of blends and weights and we are looking at adding more bases into the shop as this weight is becoming more popular. It makes great lightweight summer garments on its own or held double with another yarn. To help guide you I have made some recommendations against each blend as to what projects I would use each blend for. Hopefully this will help you to choose a blend that is perfect for your project. If you would still like some help, please feel free to send me a message via the messenger link and I’ll try to help you.

Ultra Lace Cobweb

Super soft and luxurious this yarn is great for extra light projects
100% superwash merino
This extra light cobweb lace makes beautiful super lightweight projects or you could hold it double for a heavier yarn. My recommendation would be to hold it double with another yarn in a contrasting colour to add a marled effect or colour contrast.
Each 100g skein is approximately 1200 meters

Kid Silk Lace

Beautifully soft and extra fluffy this yarn is fantastic for adding texture to your projects
72% kid mohair
28% silk
This superfine cobweb weight fluffy yarn is perfect for holding with thicker yarns to give a halo of fluff to your projects. You could either use a yarn in the same colour or as a contrast to give a marled fluffy effect. Personally I would only recommend using this held with another yarn.
Each 50g skein is approximately 420 meters
